Position Purpose & Summary

The Industrial Applications Sr Scientist – Homecare Formulations Focus position is responsible for guiding efforts to understand how biomaterials (existing and developmental) are used in formulated homecare products/applications, assist in ensuring their suitability for current uses and lead the technical work for developing new materials/formulations with potential for market growth. The position will independently develop formulated prototypes and perform applications testing on the materials relative to chemical, physical and in-applications performance (efficacy, performance, cost in use). Additionally, they will work with adjacent R&D, marketing, commercial and engineering teams to assess external opportunities, drive development of new materials, enhancement of current materials or formulated solutions basis the technical and market needs of the specific applications. This position is a core part of a cross functional team that is responsible for growing Cargill’s business in the bio industrial homecare market.

Principal Accountabilities

50%Lead effort to develop formulated materials using current and developmental ingredients to meet targeted market and customer needs. The targeted markets are primarily in-home care and the ingredients are bio-derived. Develop solutions to complex problems that require regular use of ingenuity and creativity. Conduct laboratory work including characterization, physical measurements and applications testing of formulated materials as needed to accomplish objectives. Develop prototypes of products and/or formulations for internal and external evaluation.

15% Work with and provide guidance to various internal functions (commercial, marketing, TS, operations) and customers on the technical use of bio-derived compounds and related formulations. Guide commercial team to assess potential customer value. Work with project teams to identify cost effective commercially interesting product enhancements.

10% Participate in assessment of new business opportunities. Assessments of prospective materials including technical suitability, economics, comparative analyses, etc. for cross functional team (commercial, marketing, R&D etc.). May include reports, informal summaries, meetings etc.

10% Interface with the external environment (i.e. customers, consultants/industry experts, conferences) as needed.

10% Other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, Skills

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Biochemistry or related relevant field.

  • 5 years relevant industrial research, applications testing and/or technical service experience working with formulated commercial materials.

  • Demonstrated ability to technically contribute in areas outside of core competency (agility).

  • Ability to effectively communicate with technical and non-technical colleagues and customers on properties, use and application of commercial materials

  • Ability to work in a laboratory setting

  • Demonstrated strong problem-solving and analytical skills

  • Ability to adapt and learn in a changing work environment

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Microsoft Office Suite experience

  • Ability to work independently

  • Ability to work in a team environment

  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Biochemistry or related relevant field.

  • 7 years relevant experience.

  • Experience with formulated homecare products within CPG industry

  • Demonstrated record of developing prototypes for multiple applications within the homecare or industrial cleaners space.

  • Experience in working with materials that are targeted for specific marketing strategy (i.e. Sustainable, bio-derived)

  • Experience/contact with customer organizations in development of products, services or solutions that lead to increased business

  • Experience in participating with cross functional and multi-cultural teams.

  • Developed external network in homecare industry and core expertise area.

  • Working knowledge of regulatory environment (i.e. TSCA)

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills both verbal and written.

Other relevant information to the position

This position will provide experience key to assessing and demonstrating the technical and commercial value of new or existing products and formulations that are derived from bio-based materials. With the anticipated growth in the bio-industrial space within Cargill this could lead next-step positions in technical or commercial roles
