Associate Biotechnologist (1 year temporary contract)

As the associate Food Biotechnologist you participate in research on fermentation, enzyme application, and other biotechnology-related areas with an eye toward new product development. You develop extensive hands-on experience with laboratory and pilot-scale equipment, and interface with food applications and analytical teams. You have the opportunity to collaborate on multi-disciplinary teams including members from food applications, analytical, sensory, food safety, regulatory affairs and engineering departments. You also have the opportunity to collaborate with Cargill’s global biotechnology and food ingredient footprint.

Major Tasks

  • You are responsible for research and development processes including developing experimental designs focusing on new food ingredients, execution, and reporting;

  • You support food-grade lab prototype development, including analytical, sensorial and applications evaluation;

  • You maintain food lab equipment and manage food compliance certification;

  • You apply good scientific and project management practices to assure that technical plans are developed and executed effectively against the project goals;

  • You are responsible for the isolation, purification, characterization and biobanking of microbial cultures;

  • You support culture identification, small-scale screening experiments and management of culture collection records;

  • You prepare samples for chemical analysis, data collection and data mining.


  • Bachelor Degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Biotechnology and 5 years’ experience;

  • Ability to execute experiments with minimal oversight;

  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team;

  • Experience with food systems design and application;

  • Knowledge of microbiological, biochemical and molecular diagnostic techniques;

  • Demonstrated attention to detail and critical mindset;

  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of multidisciplinary team;

  • Ability to network with groups outside Research and Development;

  • Flexible, organized and with the ability to handle multiple priorities;

  • Demonstrated awareness of safety;

  • Good oral and written communication skills (English)
