Cargill Cocoa and Chocolate offers the food industry a wide range of both standard and customized cocoa and chocolate ingredients to be used in delicious bakery, confectionery and dairy applications all over the world. This with a team of 3,500 passionate cocoa and chocolate experts working in 47 locations. Together, we provide unique knowledge, insights and service across five continents, built on a foundation of 150 years of experience.

Job Purpose

As a CMT on the cocoa trading desk you will become part of an engaged, high performance team of determined traders with diverse backgrounds. You will start being responsible for buying certain origins of cocoa beans for our processing plants and assist in executing our futures & options business. You will get exposure to all the tasks related to physical bean sourcing, futures & options trading and risk management. On a daily basis you will be talking to suppliers of cocoa beans, and to traders and brokers in the global physical and futures & options markets. You will be managing price risk in volatile markets through the ICE cocoa futures exchanges in London and New York. Next to hedging all physical cocoa business, whether beans or products, on the cocoa futures exchanges, a large and important part of the trade team is to generate revenue by taking anticipatory positions in the futures & options markets based on both fundamental and technical analysis, including algorithmic modeling. As a CMT you are expected to contribute to market analysis and trading & risk management idea generation, and at some stage execution of futures trades and managing the hedge flow. You will also have an advisory role about the cocoa market dynamics to both your suppliers and internal stakeholders.

On the cocoa trading floor there is an intense coordination and cooperation between those who trade cocoa beans and futures & options and those who trade cocoa products with customers. We will train you on the job. You will be exposed to an international environment where you interact between origin countries in Africa, Asia and South America, and the futures exchanges in London and New York. It is an environment where you need to think and act quickly as a lot is at stake.

As a CMT you participate in Cargill’s European Graduate Program, a two-year development program that offers a unique job learning experience plus personal development through mentorship and soft skill trainings. The location of the job is Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, The Netherlands.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Sourcing cocoa beans

  • Hedging physical bean and product business through futures exchanges

  • Ensuring support in business pricing and to the sales organization for a smooth execution of day to day business in case of managing the hedge flow at some stage

  • Understanding of the cocoa futures, beans and products market dynamics & drivers, and agronomy (crop cycles, qualities, trade flows)

  • Identification of risk positions

  • Execution of some independent views, being accountable for the PnL outcome

  • Contribution to idea generation during trading & sourcing game plan meetings as well as informal discussions on daily basis on the Trade desk - 20%

  • Contribute to the Global Group position risk management & Global risk call - 5%



  • Academic degree (MSc) preferably in (business) economics, mathematics, physics or finance)

  • Excellent knowledge of English and preferably French, both written and spoken.

  • Merchandising skills, preferably commodities (futures & physical), but also possible equities, forex, derivatives

  • Broad perspective and conceptual strength

  • Excellent numerical, analytical and communicating skills

  • Data management & programming skills preferred

  • High level of Integrity

  • Resilient and stress resistant
