This full time position is located in Savage MN; however please expect receiving calls from a 952 number in case you are considered. Relocation assistance is not provided.

Position purpose

Reporting to the Production Supervisor or Operations Manager (depending on type of facility), the Plant Operator contributes to physically execute Operational Excellence process for the safe and efficient operation of a stand-alone grain or crop inputs facility, or combined grain and crop inputs facilities on a daily basis to achieve production goals

  • Engaged with a team to operate the Plant equipment on a daily basis.

  • Follows Operational Policies, operator care principles and procedures to operate equipment safe and efficiently to minimize or prevent injuries, property loss and environmental damage.

  • Ensures Plant and yard are clean and safe for customers and employees.

  • Performs minor mechanical maintenance and may assist contractors on-site to perform repairs.

  • The incumbent receives grain (unloading, grading, moisture testing), and then bins, blends and ships grain to the required specifications.

  • Operates grain cleaners and dryers if the facility is equipped with them and cleans and dry’s grain to desired specifications as set out by the Mgmt

  • Assists in the efficient meshing of buying and shipping programs by working closely with the Operations Manager, Production Supervisor and carriers (rail or truck).

  • Consistently meets all rail car and truck loading requirements.

  • Blends and ships fertilizer, operates custom application equipment (if applicable), and works in the pesticide and seed warehouses to ensure that customers receive the products and services they require in an efficient and timely manner.

  • Assists the Plant management in managing the location grain and crop inputs inventory by following existing controls to minimize inventory losses.

  • Assists in operating safe and efficient crop inputs warehousing.

  • Successfully engaged to participate in training sessions for Federal regulatory and Cargill compliance programs.

  • Participates in regular plant inspections and monthly safety meetings to review procedures, housekeeping, and safety awareness issues.

  • Remains trained in and certified to handle dangerous goods as per the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and has additional safety training, e.g. , confined space, forklift, etc.

  • Participates in training to acquire and maintain knowledge on operator care principles to operate Plant equipment safely and effectively.

Additional accountabilities:

  • Grain inspector experience 2 years preferred.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to work safely and efficient

  • Ability to learn and manage compliance with Environment, Health & Safety and Operations standards and regulations

  • Knowledge of the various grain products, seed, chemical and fertilizer products to ensure that correct products are provided to customers

  • Ability to be trained and certified to work in hazardous areas and products.

  • Ability to learn how to operate equipment, i.e. fertilizer application equipment, forklift, grain handling equipment, as needed

  • Plant operator must become familiar with ISO/HACCP procedures and protocols

  • Related secondary education or training.

  • Knowledge of inventory control, quality management, operating efficiency and budget management

  • Specialized knowledge of grain and crop input products and grain handling

  • Mechanical aptitude

Physical Effort : The staff at the location performs as a team in getting work done during the busy season. The Plant Operator will be required to unload and/or load trucks, rail cars, containers/bags of chemicals and fertilizer weighing 40-60 lbs. Climbing ladders and stairs to various levels of the elevator or fertilizer tower requires physical effort particularly during busy periods.

Physical Environment : The physical environment that may cause some discomfort is the grain dust in the office, Plant and driveway due to receiving or shipping grain. There is some risk of incident if there is a chemical when handling chemical products. The Plant Operator may be required to climb to an exterior loading platform or on top of hopper cars in all types of weather, in order to load grain into cars. Must be able and willing to work from heights (i.e. ladders, catwalks, etc.) and in an outdoor/indoor environment.

Sensory Attention : In peak periods, the facility is very busy; the phone is ringing, customers are anxious to purchase products or sell their grain. There is a sense of urgency for the grower and the location staff.

Mental Stress : The nature of the business requires the location staff to put in very long hours in an intense period of time during the spring and the fall. The long hours along with the urgency of completing the tasks at hand is stressful.

  • Must be able to perform physical job duties including bending/stooping, climbing ladders, open/close valves, shoveling, pounding with hammer and work in confined spaces

  • Must be able to work under special work conditions, such as extreme heat or cold

  • Ability to work overtime

  • Ability to work holidays, nights, weekends or different shifts


  • Prior experience in production related work

  • Able to operate heavy equipment

  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • Basic computer skills
