Position Purpose & Summary

Associate Seed Agronomist will work under the supervision of the Seed Production Manager to produce certified class of hybrid canola (Brassica napus) seed that meets strict genetic and physical quality parameters for domestic and international use.

The Associate Seed Agronomist activities include but are not limited to selecting fields, coaching growers, giving fertility recommendations, field scouting, scheduling harvest, performing production research and analyzing quality on the produced seed.

Principal Accountabilities

30% Scout hybrid seed production fields- Would be responsible for up to 2000 acres of certified hybrid seed production and would be required to thoroughly walk fields a minimum of once per week during growing season. Collect and record agronomic information and make recommendations identified during the visit.

25% Work with area growers in selecting, planting, and harvesting of seed fields- Work closely with growers to identify fields that are free from weeds or brassica species, confirm cleanliness of fields, help set planting equipment and ensure proper seeds are used to create hybrids. Monitor and identify timing of harvest, set combines to minimize loss and damage to canola seed during the harvesting process.

20% Inovate/Collaborate with research teams on production research to drive higher yields- Look for ways to drive seed yields higher through hypothisising and then experimenting.

10% Analyse seed quality with QA team to ensure that all seed QA standards are met- Understand seed quality standards and work with QA team to identify any gaps or key learnings each. Associate agronomist is responsible to produce the highest quality of seeds possible to minimize financial impacts.

10% Other duties (eg. assist seed plant, assist parent seeds, inventory management)- Support other functions with in the seed business as needed.

5% Assist in Contra production agronomic coaching- Domestic and International travel to contra production areas to ensure that cultural practices as well as quality parameters are being met.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture or related field.

  • 1 year of working experience or equivalent coursework of hybrid seed or general seed production techniques.

  • Skills/knowledge of operating farm equipment used for producing a grain or seed crop

  • Valid driver's license.

  • Familiar with Microsoft software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree with an emphasis in Agronomy and Plant Breeding agronomy and/or plant breeding projects focused on canola parents and hybrids

  • 2 years' experience in seed production, agronomy support, quality assurance, conditioning, treating and other day-to-day activities pertaining to a seed business

  • Producing hybrid seed utilizing the cytoplasmic-genetic male sterility system

  • General knowledge of canola and rotational crops produced in Southern Idaho

  • Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively with team members and express opinions in a respectful manner

  • Certified Crop Advisor certification

  • Idaho Professional Pesticide Applicator license

  • Comfortable communicating in Spanish when needed

  • Experience supervising and motivating 3 to 5 people performing repetitive field cultural practices
