Position Purpose & Summary

Briefly explain the general purpose of the position.

Traders on the Panamax desk are in charge of specific market segments as defined by desk head for executing chartering and trading game plan and follow up of fixtures to ensure timely accurate performance. The position is required to feedback learning in spot/medium term market analysis and share report to the team members as well as building out the cargo book on targeted flows. There is an emphasis on both internal and external customer relationship management in this role.

The ideal candidate will combine a strong spot market read and ability to recognize and execute on opportunities that arise. This will require an individual with a strong risk appetite and someone who enjoys taking decisions and testing themselves in a challenging and rewarding market. An ability to analyze the overall value of a trade and how it fits within the strategy is also critical. Regular travel to meet customers will be expected in the role. The Trader is responsible within the regional team for building and optimizing a profitable cashbook in the region, through customer relationship and strategic pricing in line with the desk strategy. The Trader must clearly and timely communicate regional market conditions to the wider team, both in the spot and estimating realistic future values by understanding and challenging the local SnD fundamentals.

Ability to understand the impact of the region on the global freight market is essential, in order for the Trader to contribute to the overall game plan.

Principal Accountabilities

40% - Physical trading

  • Develop a profitable forward book in the region and optimize same during execution in the spot market.

  • Identify right arbitrage opportunities between employing own fleet and market fixtures. Charter in period vessels when it makes sense.

  • Execute on the desk/customer game plan in the spot market bold and timely while always complying with the Cargill vessel vetting policy and gathering market insights from brokers.

  • Independent decision-making authority for OT shorts; regional S&D analysis; fixing out vessels to product lines or 3rd parties; resolves customer disputes up to USD 100K

  • Referred to higher authority: fixing in long term period vessels; pricing long term COA business in line with desk strategy, larger customer disputes

  • Work closely with other geographies and other desks. Guide the team about expected market conditions 2-3 months down the road, evaluate opportunities to position our fleet in the region.

  • Cooperate with Operations when needed post fixture.

40% - Customer focus and business development

  • Provide competitive freight coverage and smooth execution to our customers, enabling mutual growth.

  • Understand their specific needs to come up with win/win solutions.

  • Working closely with internal product lines to provide them with value added

10% - Analysis

  • Champion regional SnD and/or specialize in a strategic flow to provide insights and contribute to the overall desk trading game plan.

  • Undertake freight market S&D analysis to assist in market reading helping to anticipate market moves and maximize opportunities both for ourselves and the customers we serve

10% - PnL, Risk Mgmt and admin

  • Work in close collaboration with all supporting functions (operations, admin, accounting, risk, credit) and ensure all administrative tasks are completed in a timely manner.

Qualifications

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, analytics, engineering or equivalent experience.

  • Further education in business or shipping an advantage

  • 3-5 years trading experience, with proven trading skills in analysis, risk/reward, timing, and bold execution in freight or other commodities.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (English)
