Position Purpose

The Maintenance Planner position is responsible for the effective execution of all maintenance work control processes. He / she is responsible to the Reliability Supervisor / assigned manager for the efficient and effective use of planning and scheduling all resources to conduct maintenance activities which result in minimum downtime and maximum productivity. In order to fulfill these responsibilities in the most effective manner, the Planner is empowered to manage work priority, develop job plans, define parts and material, define crafts and skills and engage the proper resources to develop a safe, effective and efficient work control plan. In addition, the Planner/Scheduler provides the equipment-related expertise and technical guidance on improving Preventive Maintenance activities.

Principal Accountabilities

  • 50%: The Planner is responsible for identifying the elements of an executable work package that should contain (but not limited to), the work plan, the necessary materials, tools, and permits, and labor requirements prior to passing the work on to scheduling. Planners also update and adjust existing job plans and equipment data. They are also responsible for the ongoing training of site personnel in the process to insure consistency in process execution and use of the system to capture business required data. The most important thing they can do is to identify the process and end results desired for each task identified

  • 25% - Equipment Reliability: Determine Equipment and Process Performance expectations from the Business Plan, Review Performance and Adjust Maintenance Strategy, Identify Repeat Failure Activities and Implement solutions for elimination, Ensure PM’s are qualified and reviewed, at a minimum, annually

  • 15% - Business and Management: Communicate to Stakeholders, Plan Resources, Manufacturing Process Reliability, Maintain Process and Industry Standards and Specifications, Safety, Health and Environment, Champion criticality ranking reviews for designated area(s)

  • 10% - Work Management: Comprehensive Work Identification, Review/Organize/Prioritize work approved for planning, Walk-down job – visit job site (30 - 50% of time in area), Determine if Engineering Change is required and ensure the MOC Process is part of the work package if necessary. Determine if “existing” job plan is available, Plan and estimate work orders, Coordinate with purchasing to order and reserve materials, Determine if job is ready to schedule, Change work order status appropriately based on work management process, Attend and participate in weekly scheduling meeting, Equipment History Review and Failure Identification, Effective Performance Measures and Follow-Up, Once a valid work request is submitted will prioritize, plan, schedule and follow –up on accuracy of the job plan for all planned (PM, PdM and Corrective) work. There focus is not day to day but is to be proactive and optimize workforce productivity and minimize plant downtime by managing work 2 weeks to 1 month in advance.

In performance of these duties the planner/scheduler has the following responsibilities:

Planners are expected to maintain accurate equipment files and related job plans. They are expected to organize effective job plans and keep them accurate and updated.Planners are expected to walk down jobs and insure that all safety and work process considerations are factored into the job.They are expected to incorporate safety into all work plans and help insure that work is performed safely and effectively and help insure that the work management process is managed efficiently.Planners are also expected to insure that the work management portions of the MMS are updated and accurate.



  • Over 2 years of industrial Mechanical/electrical repair planning

  • Experience in estimating labor hours, material requirement and skills needed to complete a job

  • Must be able to read / write English

  • Must be computer literate in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Good organizational skills. Demonstrated organizational and planning skills

  • Must be able to read standard blueprints, machine and process drawings.

  • Must be able to sketch or redline existing drawings

  • Over 1 year experience in maintenance processes and proper use of the work order system, planning and scheduling and storeroom processes Can manage multiple priorities or projects simultaneously and keep them progressing to completion


  • Ability to write and provide simple and accurate instructions
